A Dive into Time Travel: My Thoughts on Splinter Effect by John W. Wright

When I first came across Splinter Effect by John W. Wright, I was instantly captivated by the promise of a time travel thriller infused with rich historical elements. After all, who wouldn’t want to join a gallant archaeologist on a quest to recover artifacts lost to time? Little did I know, this journey would be as much about the intricacies of its time travel mechanics as it would be about Rabbit Ward’s personal grudges and moral complexities.

In Splinter Effect, we meet Rabbit Ward, a Smithsonian archaeologist with an impressive career overshadowed by a haunting past—a disastrous mission that led to the loss of his mentee, Aaron, during a quest for a special menorah. Rabbit’s determination to reclaim this artifact, set in 6th-Century Constantinople, pulls the reader into a labyrinth of historical politics and looming revolution. While the initial pace felt slow and laden with political intricacies that occasionally dulled the thrill, my engagement reignited with unexpected twists as Rabbit’s journey progressed.

Wright’s writing style certainly leans into the richness of history, but be prepared for a bit of a learning curve with the time travel system he crafts. It felt fresh and imaginative, although I sometimes yearned for less exposition and more action. The first half of the book wrestled with establishing the setting, making it occasionally sluggish. However, the second half spun numerous twists that kept me guessing—one in particular that completely reshaped the stakes of Rabbit’s mission.

Listening to the audiobook was a delightful choice; narrator Roger Wayne’s film noir quality lent an extra layer of intrigue to the unfolding drama. If you’re considering this one, I wholeheartedly recommend going audio.

As a first installment in a series, Splinter Effect serves as a promising launch pad. The connection to Rabbit grows deeper, and I can’t help but anticipate how future adventures will expand our understanding of the time travel mechanics—something that Wright has thoughtfully crafted but can still use a little polishing.

In conclusion, while I found some aspects—like the weight of historical narrative—slightly overwhelming, the core plot is compelling enough to give me hope for the series. It deserves a place on the shelves of readers who enjoy historical adventures wreathed in a thoughtful blend of mystery and moral reckoning. If you revel in time travel stories and the intricacies of history, this book is definitely one to consider.

A solid 3.5 stars for this unique read! I look forward to checking out the synopsis for the next installment; if it captivates me, I’ll be on board for Rabbit’s next escapade. Thank you to Minotaur Books and Macmillan Audio for providing me the opportunity to explore this intriguing world!
